Having asthma is a scary thing. While an inhaler is often the preferred method of treatment, using essential oils for asthma can be a simple solution too. If you are looking for quick and effective asthma home remedy relief, keep reading.
Asthma symptoms have a variety of triggers. When an asthma attack occurs, your lungs narrow and make it difficult to breathe. Asthma sufferers experience tightening of the chest, wheezing, shortness of breath and coughing.
Contributing factors include dust mites, allergens, smoke and pollution. Everyone may have a unique reason or combination of reasons for their asthma symptoms. I learned my triggers and got to the root cause of my asthma – then I cured it. Let me share my story with you…
My Story
After college, I became a regular at my local gym, working off those extra pounds I packed on in college. Too many late night pizzas – anyone know what I’m talking about?
Anyway to shed those pounds I was doing 1-2 hours of aerobics classes several days a week. Something was messing me up though. I got light headed and a pesky cough about 45 minutes into the workout. Almost every single workout.
At times I had to put my head between my legs so I wouldn’t pass out. I learned that coughing is a symptom of asthma and I was having an asthma attack.
With all the loud music in the gym during the class, my wheezing was being dampened out.
With a short trip to the the Dr, my asthma was diagnosed. I was frustrated and bewildered. I was in my early 20’s and never had asthma before. Why now? Read here if you want to learn what change I made to eliminate my asthma symptoms altogether.
Essential Oils are a Great Complementary Treatment
There are some essential oils that are better to treat the acute symptoms of an asthma attack, while others are best for preventative measures.
For an acute asthma attack, I recommend essential oils as a complementary treatment. I would use them before my inhaler, wait a few minutes, and see if it would do the trick. If not, the inhaler was there as a backup. Please consult your physician and use common sense.
The best application is to inhale the oils deeply during an asthma attack. Hold the bottle close to your nose and deeply inhale for several minutes. You can also use essential oil inhaler sticks like these.
- Breathe Essential Oil Blend by Doterra. Many of the oils in this blend have been researched and have been shown to open and soothe lung and respiratory tissues. They also fight airborne bacteria and viruses that cause your asthma symptoms.
I know other brands sell a Breathe Blend, read the ingredients. They are not the same, most other blends have less oils and are mostly peppermint. If you use one essential oil, Breathe is my top recommendation. Breathe Essential Oil Blend contains:
Laurel Leaf (Bay)
Peppermint
Eucalyptus radiata
Melaleuca alternifolia
Lemon
Ravensara - Eucalyptus is a good second choice and also contained in the Breathe Essential oil Blend.
- Frankincense is a good complimentary oil in addition to the Breathe blend or Eucalyptus. It has a calming effect, something we could all use during an asthma attack.
- Lavender is also a good complementary oil just like frankincense. It has a sedative effect and can be used in conjunction with Frankincense.
For Preventative Measures Against Asthma Symptoms
For preventative measures against asthma, rub the essential oils on your neck, chest, and back. Essential oils are strong and can be irritating to very sensitive skin so you can dilute them in your favorite carrier oil (coconut oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, etc).
Three oils can be used during an asthma attack and for prevention. They include:
Additional oils that assist with asthma prevention include
5. Peppermint – Promotes healthy respiratory function and clear breathing
6. Thyme – make sure to dilute thyme, it is strong and should always be diluted with a carrier oil.
Take action and give it a try!
If you’re tired of your asthma symptoms – you owe it to your health to give essential oils a try. I highly recommend the Breathe Essential Oil blend if you only buy one oil.
To make things simple for you – I already added the oils I recommended in the My Amazon Picks listed below.
I recommend Doterra and Young Living Essential Oils exclusively. I’ve tried other brands on Amazon – in a sniff to sniff comparison – other brands are watered down version – save your money for the real thing!
I had never heard of essential oils for asthma attacks, only headaches! What gave you the idea to try them? My girlfriend has asthma and I’ll have to see if she’s heard of them. Thanks for sharing your article. It was helpful to see specifically the affects of each oil!
I love essential oils for many reasons and have a book on their uses – it is my go to guide.
Hopefully your girlfriend will give them a try and get positive results
Thanks for stopping by 🙂

Hi Shannon,
I have had asthma for 34 years ever since I collapsed unable to breathe when on a hike with my father. I am fairly well controlled on the inhalers and it is unusual for me to have an attack nowadays.
I have also moved to a drier climate as opposed to the constantly moist climate I grew up in.
I have never heard of essential oils for asthma. Sometimes in the winter the air in my bedroom becomes slightly damp and I seem to have a reaction to it. Would you recommend that I leave a small bowl of essential oils in the room or does it only work when put on the skin?
Hi Brian,
That had to be a quite scary situation! I’m glad you have kept in control since that time.
I would recommend a diffuser so you inhale the essential oils. Essential oils can also be applied topically as well. When applied topically they are diluted with a carrier oil. I would strongly recommend following the instructions for each oil. Many oils need to be diluted (oil of oregano can cause burns).4
Let me know if you have any questions. All the best
Shannon
